예수는 BC 7~6년경에 베들레헴 혹은 나자렛에서 태어난 것으로 추정된다.

예수의 탄생에 대해서는 동정녀 마리아의 탄생설이 유력한데, 예수는 육적인 아버지가 없고 성령의 능력으로 마리아가 잉태했다는 것이 정통 그리스도교의 근본 교리이다.

 

로마 역서에 따르면 그리스도교의 크리스마스 축제는 336년경 로마에서 거행되었다고 한다.

4세기에 동방교회 대부분이 12월 25일에 그리스도의 탄생을 기념하기 시작하여.........

 

'크리스마스'라는 말은 '크라이스트(Christ, '메시야'라는 뜻)'와 '마스(mass, '미사'라는 뜻)'가 결합되어 만들어진 말로,

크라이스트의 탄생을 축하하고 예배하는 날이라는 의미이다.

 

한국어로는 성탄절(聖誕節), 프랑스어로는 노엘(Noel), 독일어로는 바이나흐텐(Weihnachten)이라고 한다.

이 싱글은 1978년 11월 초에 서둘러 녹음이 되어, 그룹의 라이브 세트에 포함되었고,

월말에 영국 싱글 차트 1위로 4주간 정상에 올랐으며 그 후  차트에서 8주를 보내는 등 크리스마스 넘버원 캐럴이 되었다.

 

그것은 영국의 전 기간  베스트 셀러 싱글 목록에서  그룹에 대한 두 번째 싱글이었다.

이 노래는 나중에  그룹의 크리스마스 앨범, 1981에 포함되으며 2015년 11월 현재 189만 매가 판매되었다.

 

미국에서는 빌보드 핱100,  보니 M.의 마지막 4개의 싱글 중에서  85위에 올랐다.
