More than Amazed by the Birth of Christ

It’s easy for us to be amazed by Jesus. People have always been amazed by him — until something else catches their fancy.

That’s the way it was 2,000 years ago when Jesus was born. Angels appeared in the sky to shepherds radiating with God’s glory and singing his praises. They announced that the Messiah, the Savior of the world, was born and they’d find him in the little town of Bethlehem, lying in a manger. Angels appearing to lowly shepherds?! The Savior born in a stable?! What an amazing story!

When the shepherds found the newborn Savior “they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them,” Luke says. But then he adds the contrast, “But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart” (Luke 2:18-19).

Mary was more than amazed — she chose to delight in the Lord and to think deeply about him.

The Birth of Jesus

In the small Jewish town of Nazareth, a girl lived. Her name was Maria.

One day the Lord sent an angel to Mary. Entering the girl, the angel said to her:

  • Rejoice, Maria! The Lord has chosen you from all women on earth! Soon you will have a son who will become King of Israel, Call Him Jesus, He will be God's Son, and His Kingdom will never come to an end.

Maria was very surprised, but accepted God's will willingly.

Mary had a fiance, a carpenter named Joseph. He was originally from Bethlehem. Soon she married him. But one day they had to leave Nazareth and go to Bethlehem: the king ordered to rewrite all those who live in the country, and Joseph should be enrolled in his hometown.

When they came, it turned out that the hotels did not have a place and they had nowhere to stay for the night. And the child is now the time to be born. Joseph and Mary managed to find shelter only in the stable. There Jesus was born, the Savior of the world. There was no cradle in the crib, so Mary, wrapping her son, put Him in a cattle feeder.

Midnight, Christians, it is the solemn hour
When God as man descended among us
To expunge the stain of original sin
And to put an end to the wrath of his father.
The entire world thrills with hope
On this night which gives us a savior.
People, on your knees, attend* your deliverance.
Christmas! Christmas! Here is the Redeemer!
Christmas! Christmas! Here is the Redeemer!
Le Roi des rois naît dans une humble crèche;

The ardent light of our Faith,
Guides us all to the cradle of the infant,
As in ancient times a brilliant star
Conducted the Magi there from the orient.
The King of kings was born in a humble manger;
O mighty ones of today, proud of your grandeur,
It is to your pride that God preaches.
Bow your heads before the Redeemer!
Bow your heads before the Redeemer!

Peuple, debout! Chante ta délivrance.
Noël! Noël! Chantons le Rédempteur!
Noël! Noël! Chantons le Rédempteur!

The Redeemer has broken all shackles.
The earth is free and heaven is open.
He sees a brother were there was once but a slave;
Love unites those who restrain the sword.
Who will tell him our gratitude?
It is for us all that he was born, that he suffered and died.
People, stand up, sing your deliverance!
Christmas! Christmas! Let us sing the Redeemer!
Christmas! Christmas! Let us sing the Redeemer!

O Holy Night by John Sullivan Dwight

Lyrics

O holy night, the stars are brightly shining

It is the night of our dear Savior's birth

Long lay the world in sin and ever pining

'Til he appeared and the soul felt its worth

A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices

For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn'

Fall on your knees, o hear the angels' voices

O night divine, o night when Christ was born

O night divine, o night, o night divine

Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother

And in His name all oppression shall cease

Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we

With all within, let us praise His holy name

Christ is the Lord, His Name forever praise we

Noel, Noel, o night, o night divine

Noel, noel
O night, o holy night
