"Joy to the World" is an English Christmas carol. Written in 1719 by the English minister and hymnwriter Isaac Watts, the carol's lyrics are based on a Christian interpretation of Psalm 98, Psalm 96 (verses 11 and 12), and chapter 3 of the Book of Genesis (verses 17 and 18).

"Joy to the World"《기쁘다 구주 오셨네》는 크리마스 캐럴이다.

영국의 목사,찬송작사가 아이작 왙츠가 1719년에 시편 98장, 96장11-12, 그리고 창세기 3장 17-18 을 기반으로 쓴 시(詩)다.

 

The carol is usually sung to an 1848 arrangement by the American composer Lowell Mason.

캐럴은 보통 미국의 작곡가 로웰 메이슨이 1848년에 편곡한 것으로 불려진다.

 

Since the 20th century, "Joy to the World" has been the most-published Christmas hymn in North America.

기쁘다 구주 오셨네. Joy to the World

 

작사가 Isaac Watts ( 1674-1748 )는 Edinburgh 대학에서 신학박사 학위를 받았고, 수많은 찬송가와 캐롤을 썼는데

"Joy to the World"는 1719년에 쓴 시이다.

 

캐롤은 작곡가 George Frederick Handel (1685-1759)이 1742년에 작곡한 'Messiah '의 일부이다.

1719년 45세의 왙츠는 런던 외곽의 나무 아래서 시편 98편을 바탕으로 "기쁘다 구주 오셨네"의 시를 썼다.

그후 23년이 지난 1742년에 54세의 헨델은 런던에서 2주동안 밤낮으로 하느님을 묵상하며 금식기도를 한 후 45일만에 대작 오라토리오 "메시아" 작곡을 완성했는데 '할렐루야' 합창도 이 대작의 일부이다.

 

* 오라토리오’(oratorio)란 성담곡(聖譚曲) 또는 성극(聖劇) 으로 ‘종교적 극음악’을 뜻한다.

 

그후 또 한 세기가 흘러 1848년, 미국의 로웰 메이슨은 왙츠의 시에 헨델의 메시아 일부분이 은근히 잘 어울린다는 느낌을 받아 두 작품을 합쳐보았다. 그리하여 메이슨에 의해 가사장식까지 절묘하게 가미된 "기쁘다 구주 오셨네"가 빛을 보게되었으니 그 완성까지 실로 120여년의 세월이 걸린 역작이라 하겠다.

 

Musically, the first four notes of "Joy to the World" are the same as the first four in the chorus "Lift up your heads" from Handel's Messiah (premiered 1742), and, in the third line, the same as found in another Messiah piece: the arioso, "Comfort ye".

음악적으로 "Joy to the World" 처음 네 음은 헨델의 Messiah (1742 초연)의 '"Lift up your heads" 후렴구의 처음 네 음과 동일하며 세번째 줄에서는 다른 Messiah 부분 : arioso, "Comfort ye" 에서 발견되는 음과 같다 .

 

* 아리오소(Arioso)는 '아리아 풍으로' 혹은 '작은 아리아' 라는 뜻으로 노래하듯이 연주하라는 말이다

 

Consequently, and with Mason's attribution to Handel, there has long been speculation over how much a part Handel's Messiah had in "Joy to the World".

결과적으로 헨델에 대한 메이슨의 기여와 함께 헨델의 Messiah 가 "Joy to the World"에 얼마나 많은 역할을 했는지에 대한 오랜 추측은 있어온 터이다.
