In February 1945, she joined the Women's Auxiliary Territorial Service as an honorary second subaltern
with the service number of 230873.
She trained as a driver and mechanic and was promoted to honorary junior commander
In England during World War II , the British Army recruited women, who then formed the Auxiliary Territorial Service in September 1938.
One particularly famous female member of the ATS(Auxiliary Territorial Service) was Queen Elizabeth II, then just Princess Elizabeth.

In February 1945, just a few months before World War II ended, then-Princess Elizabeth joined the ATS.
She had just turned 18 years old and was keen to join the war effort.
It took months of pleading and begging her father King George VI to allow her to join.
In the ATS, Princess Elizabeth was trained as a driver and mechanic.

3월 4일 그는 또래 여자들이 봉사하는 영국 여자 국방군에 입대하여 구호품 전달 서비스 부서 (WATS; Women's Auxiliary Territorial Service)에 배치되었다.
여자들로 구성된 WATS는 1938년 창설 당시에는 주 업무가 취사, 사환 업무, 부대 내 매점 관리 등의 비(非) 전투업무였으나, 전쟁이 커지자 운전, 탄약 관리 등의 전투업무로 확대됐다.
그곳에서 군번 230873 , 엘리자베스 윈저 소위는, 군용 트럭 운전사로 복무하며 노블레스 오블리주 를 실천하였다.
당시 기록을 보면 엘리자베스 공주는 왕위 계승자였음에도 다른 병사들과 똑같이 운전과 탄약 관리 등의 임무를 수행했다.
그는 왕실에서 그림을 그리고 악기를 연주하던 손으로 흙바닥에 앉아 차량을 고쳤다 .
그가 무릎을 꿇고 앉아 트럭 바퀴를 교체하는 모습, 트럭의 보닛을 열고 수리하는 모습을 담은 흑백사진이 당시의 활동 모습을 말해 준다.
