Cantique de Noëlor Minuit, Chrétiens

Jimie 2021. 12. 15. 20:56

In the small Jewish town of Nazareth, a girl lived. Her name was Maria.

One day the Lord sent an angel to Mary. Entering the girl, the angel said to her:

  • Rejoice, Maria! The Lord has chosen you from all women on earth! Soon you will have a son who will become King of Israel, Call Him Jesus, He will be God's Son, and His Kingdom will never come to an end.

"O Holy Night" (also known as "Cantique de Noël") is a well-known Christmas carol. Originally based on a French-language poem by poet Placide Cappeau, written in 1843, with the first line "Minuit, chrétiens! c'est l'heure solennelle" (Midnight, Christians, is the solemn hour) that composer Adolphe Adam set to music in 1847. The English version is by John Sullivan Dwight. The carol reflects on the birth of Jesus as humanity's redemption.

* Cantique de Noël -

* Minuit, Chrétiens ; Midnight, Christians

* the Redeemer, our Redeemer ; (Jesus Christ).

Cantique de Noël  or Minuit, Chrétiens

French Lyrics

Words: Placide Cappeau (1808-1877), 1843;
Translated to English as O Holy Night by John Sullivan Dwight (1813-1893).

Cappeau, a wine merchant of Roquemaure, France, who wrote poems for his own enjoyment.
Dwight was editor of Dwight's Journal of Music.

This literal translation was provided by Todd Victor Leone.

Music: Adolphe-Charles Adam (1803-1856), 1847;
Adam, born in Paris, France, is best known for his ballet Giselle (1841)
and his many other operatic and theatrical works.

"Minuit, Chretiens (Midnight, Christians)"

'Placide Cappeau'

Adolphe Charles Adam [

                                                           Adolphe Charles Adam in 1840

Adolphe Charles Adam (French: [adɔlf adɑ̃]; 24 July 1803 – 3 May 1856) was a French composer, teacher and music critic. A prolific composer for the theatre, he is best known today for his ballets Giselle (1841) and Le corsaire (1856), his operas Le postillon de Lonjumeau (1836) and Si j'étais roi (1852)

and his Christmas carol "Minuit, Chrétiens!" (Midnight, Christians, 1844, known in English as "O Holy Night").

Adam was born in Paris on 24 July 1803, the elder of the two children, both sons, of (Jean) Louis Adam and his third wife, Élisa, née Coste. She was the daughter of a prominent physician, and was a former pupil of her husband, a well-known composer, pianist and professor at the Paris Conservatoire. Louis Adam gave his son lessons, but the boy was reluctant to learn even the basics of musical theory, and instead played fluently by ear:

I loved music, but I didn't want to learn it. I would sit quiet for hours, listening to my father play the piano, and as soon as I was alone I tapped on the instrument without knowing my notes. I knew without realising it how to find the harmonies. I didn't want to do scales or read music; I always improvised.

Midnight, Christians, it is the solemn hour
When God as man descended among us
To expunge the stain of original sin
And to put an end to the wrath of his father.
The entire world thrills with hope
On this night which gives us a savior.
People, on your knees, attend* your deliverance.
Christmas! Christmas! Here is the Redeemer!
Christmas! Christmas! Here is the Redeemer!
Le Roi des rois naît dans une humble crèche;

The ardent light of our Faith,
Guides us all to the cradle of the infant,
As in ancient times a brilliant star
Conducted the Magi there from the orient.
The King of kings was born in a humble manger;
O mighty ones of today, proud of your grandeur,
It is to your pride that God preaches.
Bow your heads before the Redeemer!
Bow your heads before the Redeemer!

Peuple, debout! Chante ta délivrance.
Noël! Noël! Chantons le Rédempteur!
Noël! Noël! Chantons le Rédempteur!

The Redeemer has broken all shackles.
The earth is free and heaven is open.
He sees a brother were there was once but a slave;
Love unites those who restrain the sword.
Who will tell him our gratitude?
It is for us all that he was born, that he suffered and died.
People, stand up, sing your deliverance!
Christmas! Christmas! Let us sing the Redeemer!
Christmas! Christmas! Let us sing the Redeemer!

Lyrics

O holy night, the stars are brightly shining

It is the night of our dear Savior's birth

Long lay the world in sin and ever pining

'Til he appeared and the soul felt its worth

A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices

For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn'

Fall on your knees, o hear the angels' voices

O night divine, o night when Christ was born

O night divine, o night, o night divine

Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother

And in His name all oppression shall cease

Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we

With all within, let us praise His holy name

Christ is the Lord, His Name forever praise we

Noel, Noel, o night, o night divine

Noel, noel
O night, o holy night

Artemios "Demis" Ventouris-Roussos (/ˈrss/ ROO-sohss; Greek: Αρτέμιος "Ντέμης" Βεντούρης-Ρούσσος, IPA: [arˈtemi.oz ˈdemiz venˈduriz ˈrusos]; 15 June 1946 – 25 January 2015) was a Greek singer, songwriter and musician. As a band member he is best remembered for his work in the progressive rock music act Aphrodite's Child, but as a vocal soloist, his repertoire included hit songs like "Goodbye, My Love, Goodbye", "From Souvenirs to Souvenirs" and "Forever and Ever".

Roussos sold over 60 million albums worldwide and became "an unlikely kaftan-wearing sex symbol"

Roussos was born and raised in Alexandria, Egypt, in a Greek family.  His father George (Yorgos) Roussos was a classical guitarist and an engineer and his mother Olga participated with her husband in an amateur theatrical Greek group in Alexandria (there were three such groups in the Greek community); her family originally came from Greece.

As a child, he studied music and joined the Greek Church Byzantine choir in Alexandria.  His formative years in the ancient port city's cosmopolitan atmosphere were influenced by jazz, but also traditional Arab and Greek Orthodox music.  His parents lost their possessions during the Suez Crisis and consequently decided to move to Greece.
