작시자 : 윌리암 카우퍼(William Cowper, 1731~1800) 영국, 허트 포트 셔 출신.

 

변호사이며 18세기 영국의 대표적인 낭만파 시인인 '윌리엄 카우퍼는 자신이 이룬 명성을 지켜야 하며

더 훌륭한 인물이 되어야 한다는 압박감에 시달리다 마음에 병을 얻게 되고

33세 무렵, 18개월간 여러 정신병이 겹쳐 요양원에서 지내던 어느 날 성경을 읽던 중에

 

로마서 3장 25절

"이 예수를 하나님이 그의 피로 인하여 믿음으로 말미암는 화목 제물로 세우셨으니

이는 하나님께서 길이 참으시는 중에 전에 지은 죄를 간과하심으로 자기의 의로우심을 나타내려 하심이니, "

 

이 말씀을 읽고 자신의 죄가 예수께서 십자가에 죽으심으로 사해졌으니

더 이상 죄로 인하여 불안하거나절망할 필요가 없다는 것을 깨닫게 되어서 이 찬송시를 짓게 되었으며

다시는 죄에 얽매이지 않고 당당히 살아갈 수 있는 힘을 얻게 되었다.

 

로웰 메이슨(Lowell Mason:1782~1872)이 미국에서 민요로 전해오던 곡을 지금의 찬송으로 편곡하였다.
