Robert Burns (25 January 1759 – 21 July 1796), also known as Rabbie Burns,

the Bard of Ayrshire, Ploughman Poet and various other names and epithets, was a Scottish poet and lyricist .

He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide.

He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language, although much of his writing

is also in English and a light Scots dialect, accessible to an audience beyond Scotland.

 

He also wrote in standard English, and in these writings his political or civil commentary is often at its bluntest.

 

He is regarded as a pioneer of the Romantic movement,

and after his death he became a great source of inspiration to the founders of both liberalism 

and socialism, and a cultural icon in Scotland and among the Scottish diaspora around the world.

 

 

디아스포라 (Diaspora)는 그리스어 διασπορά에서 온 것으로 ‘씨를 뿌린다’의 이산(離散)을 뜻하는 의미다.

원래 유대인의 민족적 이산(離散) 상황을 뜻하는 용어였지만, 현대에서는 전쟁과 식민지화로 고국을 등져야 했던 난민이나 인민 그리고 그 후손들을 총칭하는 단어로 확장되어 쓰이고 있다.

 

 

Celebration of his life and work  became almost a national charismatic cult during the 19th and 20th centuries,

and his influence has long been strong on Scottish literature.

In 2009 he was chosen as the greatest Scot by the Scottish public in a vote run by Scottish television channel STV.

 

 낭만주의 운동의 선구자인 로버트 번즈(Robert Burns, 1759-1796)는 스코틀랜드에서 가난한 소작 농부의  일곱 남매중 장남으로 태어나  어렸을 때부터 어른 한 사람의 노동력을 감당해야 했기에 공부할 처지가 아니어서 아버지를 통한 것과 독학이 학력의 전부였다고 전합니다.

 

그의 아버지 농사일이 잘 않되어 여기저기 전전하면서 번즈는 농장에서 일을 돕습니다.

어렸을 때부터 고된 일을 하면서 일찍 몸이 망가져  한평생 병골로 살았다 합니다.

그래서인지  한평생 우울증을 끼고 살았으며  꾸부정한 등으로 평생 살았던 것도 어릴 때의 과도한 노동 탓이었다 합니다.

 

그래도 독실한 기독교 신자인 그의 아버지는 교육의 중요성을 깨닫고 마을 교사를 두어

아들의 교육을 시켰고  영리한 아들은 일찍부터 Shakespeare를 읽을 수 있었습니다.

 

15세 때 그의 첫사랑 Nelie Blair를 위한 그의 첫 시 " My Handsome Nell"을...

 

O, once I lov'd a bonnie lass,
Ay, and I love her still;
And, whilst that virtue warms my breast
I'll love my handsome Nell.

The heroine of this song, Nelly Kilpatrick, was the daughter of the village blacksmith,

and the poet's first partner in the labours of the harvest-field.

 

그는 시인이 될 생각은 없었으나 첫 사랑을 하면서 자연발생적으로 시를 쓰게 되었다 합니다.

그는 짧은 생애를 통해 많은 여인들의 주목을 받았고 사랑의 시도 많이 썼습니다.

1794년에 쓴" A Red Red Rose"는 그 중의 하나이며 지금도 세계적으로 널리 애송되고 있습니다.

 

번즈는 불운이 겹쳐 지치고 파산한  상태에서 농부의 생을 마감하고 서른 일곱에 요절합니다.(1759-1796)

 

일제치하 (해외)독립투사들이 애국가로 불렀고 우리들 학교 졸업식의 노래로도 불려졌으며  

사람들이 헤어질 때나 망년회 등에서도 즐겨 불러 너무 친숙한 노래가 있으니 ‘Auld Lang Syne'~~~.........

번즈는 자기가 발견한 옛 노래라고 주장했지만 이 노래의 대부분은 이 시인이 지었으리라고 많은 사람들은 믿고 있습니다.

 

올드 랭 자인(auld lang syne)은  스코틀랜드 사투리이고  표준어로는 '올드 롱 신스'(old long since)로  

우리말로는  '그리운 옛날' 쯤일~...것 입니다.

 

서른 일곱, 너무 젊은 나이에 요절,  

불우한 농부의 짧은 삶을 마감한 옛 시인의 운명이 참 애처롭습니다.
