Danny Boy is a famous ballad with lyrics by the English songwriter Frederic Weatherly; it was composed in 1910,

set to the popular tune of Londonderry Air, and concerns the nostalgic lament of a mother whose son has gone off to war, perhaps never to return.

Judy Garland recorded the song in 1940 as part of her Irish-themed musical "Little Nellie Kelly",

which was also Garland's first venture into adult roles. However, the song in question was cut from the finished film.

 

 

런던데리는 아일랜드에서 두번째로 큰 도시이며, 참나무의 고장이란 뜻의 데리(derry) 는

1604년 런던의 통치구로 승인 되면서 런던데리라는 지명으로 바뀌었는데 1604년 부터 8년 전쟁을 치루었고,

1688년에는 1백 5일간의 시민 전쟁을 치룬 격전지이기도 하다

 

이같은 전란 속에, 아들을 전쟁터로 보내야만 했던 아버지가 사랑하는 아들을 위해  불렀던 애절한 정이 구전되는 노래로  후에 영국의 변호사겸 작곡가, 라디오 진행자였던 '프레드릭 에드워드 웨덜리'에 의해 "Danny Boy'로 이름이 바뀌어 전해지게 되었다.

A collection of rather sad Judy Garland  pictures and clips to the song 'Danny Boy' (sung in 1955, when she was 33.)  I read in one of her biographies that her Dad used to sing this song to her when she was a little girl back in Grand Rapids.  
The clips are from movies such as Babes on Broadway, Love Finds Andy Hardy, A Star Is Born, Girl Crazy, Meet Me In St Louis and Easter Parade.

1910년, 영국의 변호사, 작사가였던 프레드릭 웨덜리(1848-1929)가 작사한 오 데니 보이는 

Londonderry Air (Air from county Londonderry, 북아일랜드의 런던데리 지방의 노래)라는 아일랜드 民謠에 쓴 가사로

1915년에 미국에서 녹음되어 새世紀의 가장 유명한 노래가 되었다.

 

이 노래는 듣는 사람에 따라,

전쟁으로 떠나는 아들에게 보내는 부모의 메시지, 혹은 떠나는 아일랜드의 디아스포라에게 보내는 메시지로 해석되기도...

오, 데니 보이, 골짜기에서 산 기슭까지 피리가 부른다 

여름은 가고 薔薇(장미)는 모두 지는데 너는 가야 하고 나는 남아서 기다려야 하네.
하지만 너는 여름의 牧場(목장)에 아니면 골짜기가 눈으로 하얗게 沈默(침묵)할 때 돌아올 거야.

 

나는 해가 빛날 때도 흐릴 때도 여기 있을게.

오 데니보이, 나는 너를 사랑해
