People in Auckland were forced to evacuate their homes on Friday (January 27) as heavy rains caused major flooding in some parts of the city. Footage from local broadcaster TVNZ showed people moving through chest-deep floodwaters, one person carrying a child and another a dog as they were forced to move to higher ground.
New Zealand's MetService issued severe weather watches and warnings as the torrential rain continued to fall. Local police urged motorists to take care on the roads with some land slips reported.
