Hayley Westenra - Gabriel's Oboe (Whispers In A Dream);Nella fantasia

Jimie 2022. 8. 23. 10:34

"Gabriel's Oboe" is the main theme for the 1986 film The Mission, with Robert de Niro, Jeremy Irons, Liam Neeson and directed by Roland Joffé.

The theme was written by Italian composer Ennio Morricone, and has since been arranged and performed several times by artists such as Yo-Yo Ma,[2] Holly Gornik, and Brynjar Hoff, among others.

The theme has been called "unforgettable" and a "celebrated oboe melody".

Vocalist Sarah Brightman convinced Morricone to allow her to set lyrics to the theme to create her own song, "Nella Fantasia".

In 2010, Morricone encouraged soprano Hayley Westenra to write English lyrics for "Gabriel's Oboe" in her album Paradiso.

The soundtrack for the film was very well received amongst critics, being nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score and earning Morricone the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score.

"Gabriel's Oboe (Whispers In A Dream)"

Whispers in a dream
The world is quiet and waiting
And all around the air is still
And sings the angels

When all is come to pass
The storm has breathed it's last
And the rain
Has washed our fears away
Love will find

Whispers in the wind
The clouds part to let the light in
And all around the people sigh
As birds take to the sky

When all is come to pass
The storm has breathed it's last
And the rain
Has washed our fears away
Love will fall on us all
The world will smile again

Whispers in a dream
The world is quiet and waiting
And all around the air is still
Then sings the angels

When all is come to pass
The storm has breathed it's last
And the rain
Has washed our fears away
Love will fall on us all
And we can smile again

The main theme, called Gabriel's Oboe, is one of the most stirring piece of music I'd ever come across. The name of the score refers to the scene where Father Gabriel (Irons) travels to Iquazu Falls, climbs to the top and plays his oboe.3/04/2013

Gabriel's Oboe,” the film's most famous theme, appears early in the film as Father Gabriel ascends the beautifully-shot Iguazu Falls to set up his mission.16/01/2020

Gabriel's oboe - Nella fantasia

A great film score from a movie called The Mission written by Ennio Morricone. Conducted by the composer.

The second part of the video is song version starting from 9:35.

Lyrics:

Nella fantasia io vedo un mondo giusto,
Lì tutti vivono in pace e in onestà.
Io sogno d'anime che sono sempre libere,
Come le nuvole che volano,
Pien' d'umanità in fondo all'anima.

Pien' d'umanità in fondo all'anima

English translation:

In my fantasy I see a just world
Where everyone lives in peace and honesty
I dream of souls that are always free
Like a cloud that floats
Full of humanity in the depths of the soul

In my fantasy I see a bright world
Where each night there is less darkness
I dream of souls that are always free
Like the cloud that floats

In my fantasy exists a warm wind
That breathes into the city, like a friend
I dream of souls that are always free
Like the cloud that floats
Full of humanity in the depths of the soul

Here's the English lyrics if you wanna know what she's singing in English!:
In my fantasy, I see a just and true world, all live there in peace and honesty. I dream of souls who are eternally free as clouds that pass in the firmament; souls overflowing with humanity that is the greatest desire of mankind.

In my fantasy, there is a warm wind which breathes upon the cities as a friend. I dream of souls who are eternally free as clouds that pass in the firmament; souls overflowing with humanity that is the greatest desire of mankind.

Interesting bit of history of this recording/performance: Chloe/Celtic Woman is performing "Nella Fantasia" ("In My Fantasy"), which is Sarah Brightman's lyrics added to"Gabriel's Oboe" by Ennio Morricone (part of the soundtrack to the movie "The Mission.")

The irony is the fact that one-time Celtic Woman Hayley Westenra added her own lyrics to the same song -- at Morricon's request (?) -- thus creating the song titled "Whispers In A Dream," which was featured on her album "Paradiso."

Whispers In A Dream~Hayley Westenra❤✿ڿڰۣڿڰۣ

Hayley Dee Westenra (born 10 April 1987)  is a New Zealand classical crossover singer and songwriter. Her first internationally released album, Pure, reached number one on the UK classical charts in 2003 and has sold more than two million copies worldwide, making it one of the fastest selling albums in her country's history.

She is one of the youngest UNICEF Ambassadors to date.

Westenra has sung in English, Māori, Irish, Welsh, Spanish, Italian, German, French, Portuguese, Latin, Japanese, Standard Mandarin Chinese, Catalan, and Taiwanese Hokkien.

Early life

Westenra was born in Christchurch, New Zealand. Her parents, Gerald and Jill Westenra, have two younger offspring, Sophie and Isaac. Sophie is an academic and teaches law at Oxford.  Westenra's grandmother Shirley Ireland was a singer, and her grandfather was a pianist who also played the piano accordion.  She has Irish, Dutch and English heritage.

She began performing at age six in the Christmas play  at her school, Fendalton Open Air School.  After the show, a teacher said she was "pitch perfect"  and encouraged Westenra to learn how to play a musical instrument; soon after she learned to read music and play the violin, piano, guitar, and recorder. She then began voice lessons and discovered a passion for musical theatre. By age 11, she had performed more than 40 times on stage,  and was often given male parts.  Westenra attended Cobham Intermediate School in 1998 and 1999, where a performing arts building was later named in her honour.

Career

2000–2002: Debut

At the age of 12, Westenra entered a professional recording studio to record Walking in the Air, a demo album originally created for friends and family, with 70 copies made; they soon made 1000 more copies, and attracted attention from a journalist with Canterbury Television, who asked Westenra to appear on air. Gray Bartlett, the director of a concert promotion company, saw the show and shortly after, she was offered a recording deal with Universal Records New Zealand. On that label, Westenra, who in the meantime was attending Burnside High School, released a self-titled album of show tunes and light classical songs, as well as My Gift to You, a CD of Christmas music. Following the success of her albums, she was offered and later received lessons from Malvina Major.
