Henrik Chaim Goldschmidt plays "Gabriel's Oboe"

"Gabriel's Oboe" is the main theme for the 1986 film The Mission, with Robert de Niro, Jeremy Irons, Liam Neeson and directed by Roland Joffé.

 

The theme was written by Italian composer Ennio Morricone, and has since been arranged and performed several times by artists such as Yo-Yo Ma,[2] Holly Gornik,  and Brynjar Hoff,  among others.

 

The theme has been called "unforgettable"  and a "celebrated oboe melody".

Vocalist Sarah Brightman convinced Morricone to allow her to set lyrics to the theme to create her own song, "Nella Fantasia".

 

In 2010, Morricone encouraged soprano Hayley Westenra to write English lyrics for "Gabriel's Oboe" in her album Paradiso.

 

The soundtrack for the film was very well received amongst critics, being nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score and earning Morricone the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score.

This is taken from the "Mario Frangoulis - Live with The Boston Pops" DVD, filmed in Boston, Massachusets at the Boston Symphony Hall in 2012.

Mario first toured with Hayley when she was 15 and had just released her debut album "Pure".

 

This concert is presented by the Horatio Alger Association. The song "Gabriel's Oboe" was originally composed by Ennio Morricone for the film "The Mission".

 

In 2011, Morricone and Hayley came together to make a collaboration album, entitled "Paradiso".

It includes this song, whose lyrics are by Hayley. It was the first time Morricone had given his blessing to an artist to put their own words to his music, and Hayley wrote lyrics for two more pieces on the album.

The Mission's main theme performed by Munchen Radio Orchestra under the direction of Morricone himself and recorded by Giovanni Morricone.

 

Morricone received the Academy Honorary Award in 2007 "for his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music." He also received 5 Oscar nominations and he won 3 Grammy Awards, 2 Golden Globes as well as numerous other awards, which are too many to mention. A composer of music for the cinema, whose music was an element in itself.
