잘 생긴 외모에 부드럽고 폭 넓은 목소리로 60~70년대 최고의 발라드 가수로 평가 받는 Engelbert Humperdinck는 1967년에 발표된 그의 대표적 히트곡 "Release Me"로 일약 수퍼스타의 반열에 오른다.

이미 1966년에 컨트리 명곡 "The Green Green Grass Of Home"을 톰 존스에게 주어 크게 재미를 본 고든 밀즈는 잉글버트 험퍼딩크에게도 에디 밀러의 컨트리 넘버 "Release Me"를 부르게 해서 순식간에 미국의 인기 차트 상위에 오르게 했다.

지금이나 그때나 미국의 히트 차트에 오른다는 것은 곧 세계적인 스타가 된다는 것이다. 톰 존스보다 약2년 정도 늦게 히트곡을 내기는 했지만 1967년 이후 그의 히트곡은 끊임없이 터져 나왔고 1973년까지 꾸준히 레코딩 활동을 해 톰 존스와 함께 영국을 대표하는 세계적인 팝 스타로 군림했다.

Arnold George Dorsey MBE (born 2 May 1936), known professionally as Engelbert Humperdinck, is a British pop singer who has been described as "one of the finest middle-of-the-road balladeers around". He achieved international prominence in 1967 with the hit single "Release Me".

Humperdinck's recordings of "Release Me" and "The Last Waltz" both topped the UK Singles Chart in 1967, selling more than a million copies each. He scored further major hits including "Am I That Easy to Forget" and "A Man Without Love". Three of his singles were among the best-selling of the 1960s in the United Kingdom. During the 1970s, he had North American chart successes with "After the Lovin'" (1976) and "This Moment in Time" (1979). He represented the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2012 in Baku with the song "Love Will Set You Free".

Humperdinck continues to perform, having sold more than 140 million records worldwide.

Early life

Arnold George Dorsey was born in Madras, British India (now Chennai, India) in 1936, one of ten children to British Army NCO Mervyn Dorsey, who was of Welsh descent, and his wife Olive, who, according to the singer, was of German descent. Various sources also say that he has Anglo-Indian heritage.

His family moved to Leicester, England, when he was ten years old. He later showed an interest in music and began learning the saxophone. By the early 1950s, he was playing saxophone in nightclubs, but he is believed not to have begun singing until he was in his late teens. His impression of Jerry Lewis prompted friends to begin calling him "Gerry Dorsey", a name that he worked under for almost a decade.
