'Hallelujah Chorus' from Handel's Messiah

George Frideric (or Frederick) Handel (/ˈhændəl/; baptised Georg Friederich Händel, German: [ˈɡeːɔʁk ˈfʁiːdʁɪç ˈhɛndl̩]); 23 February 1685 – 14 April 1759) was a German-British Baroque composer well known for his operas, oratorios, anthems, concerti grossi, and organ concertos. Handel received his training in Halle and worked as a composer in Hamburg and Italy before settling in London in 1712, where he spent the bulk of his career and became a naturalised British subject in 1727. He was strongly influenced both by the middle-German polyphonic choral tradition and by composers of the Italian Baroque.

헨델의 ‘메시아’

전체 3부 53곡으로 구성,

 

히브리어 메시아는 ‘기름이 부어진 자’, ‘하나님의 선택을 받은 지배자’, ‘고뇌하는 자의 해방자’라는 뜻의 "구세주".

1742년 4월 23일 헨델의 오라토리오 ‘메시아’ 더블린에서 초연,

제1부 ‘예언과 탄생’은 전체적으로 맑고 온화한 분위기의 명곡이고,

제2부 ‘수난과 속죄’는 복음 선포와 그 최후의 승리를 이야기하고 있으며,
2부 마지막에 유명한 ‘할렐루야’ 합창이 등장한다.

1750년 런던 공연 당시 영국 국왕 조지 2세가 ‘할렐루야’의 장엄한 합창을 듣고 감동받은 왕 조지2세가 일어난 뒤 ‘메시아’ 할렐루야  합창부분에 관객기립전통이 생겼다고 함. 

제3부 ‘부활과 영원한 생명’은 굳은 신앙 고백으로 시작해 영생의 찬미로 장엄하게 마무리한다.　
마지막 곡인 ‘죽임당하신 어린양’에서는 합창단이 ‘그렇게 될지어다’는 뜻의 ‘아멘’을 반복해 부르며 그분께서 다스리시는 메시아 왕국을 기다리는 것이다.
