For me it should rain red roses

is the title of a chanson from 1968 by Hildegard Knef . Music and arrangement are by Hans Hammerschmid ; Fred Weyrich produced the song for TELDEC Telefunken-Decca Schallplatten GmbH . In 1992 Hildegard Knef recorded the piece again with the band Extrabreit as a rock number and was in the German charts for 22 weeks the following year. The chanson, written shortly after the birth of her daughter, is considered Hildegard Knef's most famous song and her authentic trademark.  As such, it has been covered numerous other artists.

 

Background and publication

 

In May 1968, Hildegard Knef's daughter Christina was born seven weeks before the expected due date, with considerable complications for both mother and daughter. She left the clinic herself in mid-June and brought her daughter home about two weeks later. The following August she picked up red roses for me .  The music and the text for For me it should rain red roses come from Hans Hammerschmid and Hildegard Knef. In an interview she said that she had asked Hammerschmid to compose a melody in three-four time for her "highly aggressive" text.

"I once wrote that in a moment of absolute megalomania [...] That's a really highly aggressive song. [...] It's supposed to rain red roses for me, I don't really care what happens to the others. "

The single was released by TELDEC Telefunken-Decca Schallplatten GmbH , DECCA for short, in 1968; the B-side contained the title From now on it went downhill .

The song also appeared on the published also in 1968 live album Knef Concert  and other LPs.

The single For me the heck red roses raining from Hildegard Knef could not be placed in the German, Austrian and Swiss charts,  but was one of their best known songs. Again and again it was linked to her biography, which was marked by ups and downs (“thorny experiences”).
