El Dorado [èl dərάːdou]

축제 때 벌거벗은 몸에 황금가루를 칠하고 의식이 끝나면 구아타비타 호수에 뛰어들어 가루를 씻어냈다고 하며, 신하들은 보석과 금으로 만든 물건들을 호수에 던졌다고 한다. 페루와 멕시코를 정복한 스페인인들은 1530년 이전에 이 이야기를 전해 들었고, 1538년 '금가루를 칠한 사람'을 찾기 위해 보고파 고지대로 갔으나 흔적을 찾지 못했다. 이후 그 지역은 스페인인이 통치했다. 

 

엘도라도는 전설적인 황금의 도시를 뜻하는 말이 되었지만, 시볼라·키비라·카에사르·오트로메이코처럼 풍요를 상징하는 여러 신화적인 지역 중 하나에 지나지 않았다. 이러한 지역을 찾아다니면서 스페인 등은 아메리카 대륙을 빠른 속도로 탐험해 정복해나갔다. 그뒤 엘도라도는 그 자리에서 쉽게 부를 얻을 수 있는 모든 장소를 뜻하게 되었다.

The Legend of El Dorado

The myth of El Dorado began soon after early Spanish explorers arrived in South and Central American regions. Although there are many different versions of the story, the main idea as told by the locals of this area involved an immensely wealthy king and the city of gold that he ruled.

 

In further detail, this king called "El Dorado" by the Spanish (meaning "The Gilded One") was said to have covered his body in gold dust and dived into a sacred lake, washing it off. He then offered gold to the gods by tossing it into the lake.

 

The king's city itself came to be known as El Dorado as the story spread. Lake Guatavita, which is near modern-day Bogota, was once said to be the lake that the king dived into and sacrificed the gold in. This was because the Muisca people of that region had performed real rituals with gold similar to the king's supposed doings.

 

Spaniards and Germans both searched for the legendary city in several different locations in 1538, never finding it. Local inhabitants who did not want to be bothered usually told the Europeans that the city was somewhere far away, in hopes that the foreigners would search elsewhere.

 

Explorers all over the world searched in South America in places like Chile, Paraguay, and Colombia for cities of gold. Some of the expeditions were also extremely violent. Although the imaginary city was never found, El Dorado has made its way into popular culture, literature, film, and many other societal aspects throughout the historical and modern world.
