"O mio babbino caro" ("Oh my dear papa") is a soprano aria from the opera Gianni Schicchi (1918) by Giacomo Puccini to a libretto by Giovacchino Forzano.
It is sung by Lauretta after tensions between her father Schicchi and the family of Rinuccio, the boy she loves, have reached a breaking point that threatens to separate her from Rinuccio. It provides an interlude expressing lyrical simplicity and love in contrast with the atmosphere of hypocrisy, jealousy, double-dealing, and feuding in medieval Florence. It provides the only set-piece in the through-composed opera.

The aria was first performed at the premiere of Gianni Schicchi on 14 December 1918 at the Metropolitan Opera in New York by the popular Edwardian English soprano Florence Easton. It has been sung by many sopranos. Dame Joan Hammond won a Gold Record in 1969 for 1 million sold copies of this aria.
The aria is frequently performed in concerts and as an encore in recitals by many popular and crossover singers.

The name on Callas's New York birth certificate is Sophie Cecilia Kalos. She was born at Flower Hospital (now the Terence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center), 1249 5th Avenue, Manhattan, on December 2, 1923,
to Greek parents, George Kalogeropoulos (c. 1881–1972) and Elmina Evangelia "Litsa" née Demes, originally Dimitriadou (c. 1894–1982),
although she was christened Maria Anna Cecilia Sofia Kalogeropoulos (Greek: Μαρία Άννα Καικιλία Σοφία Καλογεροπούλου).
Callas's father had shortened the surname Kalogeropoulos first to "Kalos" and subsequently to "Callas" to make it more manageable.

Gianni Schicchi (Italian pronunciation: [ˈdʒanni ˈskikki]) is a comic opera in one act by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Giovacchino Forzano, composed in 1917–18.
The libretto is based on an incident mentioned in Dante's Divine Comedy.
The work is the third and final part of Puccini's Il trittico (The Triptych) – three one-act operas with contrasting themes, originally written to be presented together.
Although it continues to be performed with one or both of the other trittico operas, Gianni Schicchi is now more frequently staged either alone or with short operas by other composers. The aria "O mio babbino caro" is one of Puccini's best known, and one of the most popular arias in opera.

줄거리
- 1299년, 피렌체
피렌체의 부호, 부오조의 친척들은 그의 임종을 지키기 위해 모였다. 겉으로는 그를 위하여 기도하고 있지만 머릿속은 유산에 관한 생각으로 가득하다. 그때 부오조의 전 재산이 수도원에 기증되었다는 소식을 듣고 만약 그 소문이 사실이라면, 모든 유산은 물거품이 된다며 서로 유언장을 먼저 찾으려고 난리다.
드디어 치타의 조카 리누치오가 금고 안에서 유언장을 찾아낸다. 유언장을 치타에게 넘겨주기 전에, 라우레타와의 결혼을 승낙해준다면 유언장을 주겠다고 한다. 치타는 결혼을 승낙하고, 친척들이 유언장을 읽으려고 소란한 사이에 리누치오는 라우레타와 그녀의 아버지인 잔니 스키키를 부른다. 유언장을 확인한 시모네는 유산이 모두 수도원에 갔다는 사실을 알리고, 리누치오는 이 문제를 잔니 스키키와 상의하자고 한다.

Giacomo Puccini (22 December 1858 – 29 November 1924) was an Italian composer known primarily for his operas. Regarded as the greatest and most successful proponent of Italian opera after Verdi, he was descended from a long line of composers, stemming to the late-Baroque era. Though his early work was firmly rooted in traditional late-19th-century Romantic Italian opera he later developed his work in the realistic verismo style, of which he became one of the leading exponents.
His most renowned works are La bohème (1896), Tosca (1900), Madama Butterfly (1904), and Turandot (1924), all of which are among the most frequently performed and recorded of all operas.
