듀프렌느(Dufrenne)는 그의 연구에서, 미는 객관에 의한 절대적인 것과 주관에 의한 표현의 장단점을 각각 절충하는 것이며, 보편적이고 개별적인 것이라고 말한다.

독일의 철학자인 헤겔(Hegel, G. W.)은 그의 저서(Ästhetik)에서, 미는 미를 인식하는 의식에 대한 아름다움이라고 말한다. 인간은 감각적 경험을 통해 어떤 대상을 아름답다고 하는데, 이것에 의거하고 있다. 따라서 우리가 눈으로 볼 수 있는 것은 형태로 나타나는 것이 아니라 주어진 형태나 형상을 아름답도록 규정지어 준다.
