Martin Johnson Heade (originally Heed) was born in Lumberville, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania on August 11, 1819. 

 

Heade grew up in rural Pennsylvania and studied art with his neighbour the folk artist Edward Hicks and possibly with Hicks’s cousin Thomas Hicks, a portrait painter. He exhibited his work publicly for the first time in 1841, at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and from that point proceeded to exhibit frequently. Heade’s earliest works were genre paintings and portraits of notable figures, such as American military and political leader Sam Houston (1847) and the Rev. Noah Hunt Schenck (before 1849).

Martin Johnson Heade, Heade originally spelled Heed, (born August 11, 1819, Lumberville, Pennsylvania, U.S.—died September 4, 1904, St. Augustine, Florida), American painter known for his salt marsh landscapes, seascapes, and depictions of tropical birds (such as hummingbirds), as well as lotus blossoms and other lstill-life paintings and associated with the luminist aesthetic.

1819년 펜실베이니아 주 럼버빌에서 상점 주인의 아들로 태어났다. 어린 시절 전원 풍경을 그린 민속화가 에드워드 힉스(Edward Hicks)로부터 미술을 배웠다. 1840년대 그의 초기 작품은 주로 초상화였으나, 유럽을 여러 번 여행하고 미국 해안가를 다니면서 풍경을 즐겨 그리기 시작했다. 1841년 필라델피아, 1843년 뉴욕에서 전시회를 개최하며, 직업 화가가 되었다.

 

1857년 뉴욕으로 이주하여 앨버트 비어슈타트, 프레더릭 에드윈 처치 등의 허드슨 리버 화파의 화가들과 교감을 하고 풍경을 그렸다. 그는 열대 식물들과 꽃을 섬세하게 묘사하기 위해, 열대 지방을 수차례 여행하기도 했다. 특히 미국 북동부 뉴잉글랜드 지역의 염생습지 위의 오묘한 빛과 그림자에 대한 묘사로 유명하다. 그의 회화 인생 후반기에는 꽃을 소재로 한 정물을 많이 그렸다.

 

생전에는 그리 알려지지 않았으나 1940년대 미국 예술가들에 의해서 재조명되었다. 주요 작품으로 《햇빛과 그림자: 뉴베리 습지대 Sunlight and Shadow: The Newbury Marshes》(1871~75), 《로드아일랜드의 습지대 The Marshes at Rhode Island》(1866) 등의 풍경화와 《난초, 시계꽃, 세 마리의 벌새 Cattleya Orchid and Three Hummingbirds》(1880), 《푸른 벨벳 위의 거대한 매그놀리아 Giant Magnolias on a Blue Velvet Cloth》(1890)의 정물화가 대표적이다.

 

1883년 플로리다 주 세인트오거스틴으로 이주하여 1904년 생을 마감했다.
