트럼프 대통령은 2021년 1월 08일(현지시간) 자신의 트위터계정을 통해

“나는 1월 20일 취임식에 가지 않을 것”이라고 밝혔다.

미국 현직 대통령의 후임 대통령 취임식 불참은

17대 대통령이었던 앤드루 존슨(재임기간 1865년 4월 15일~1869년 3월 4일) 이후 152년 만에 처음으로

대통령 취임식의 아름다운 전통을 깨는 것이다.

HONORARY DEPARTURE

 

Following the Swearing-In Ceremonies on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol,

the newly installed President and Vice President have escorted their predecessors out of the Capitol,

the former President and First Lady have left the Capitol grounds by helicopter (weather permitting),

the outgoing President and First Lady leave the Capitol to begin their post-presidential lives.

 

The new President and Vice President then return to the Capitol Building for the Inaugural Luncheon hosted by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies.

 

 

미국 대통령 취임식은 통상 오전 9~10시 의사당에서 시작한다.

떠나는 대통령은 전직 대통령들과 함께 참석하여 새 대통령 취임 선서를 지켜본다.

 

낮 12시 취임 선서를 기점으로 정권 교체가 공식화된다.

취임식 후 새 대통령 내외는 퇴임하는 대통령 내외를 의사당 뒤편 헬기장까지 에스코트한다.

퇴임한 대통령은 헬기를 타고 앤드루스 공군기지로 이동한다(기상조건에 따름).

새 대통령의 배려로 마지막으로 에어포스원을 타고 고향으로 돌아가는데, 탑승 직전 마지막으로 대국민 메시지를 전하기도 한다.
