a town on the coast of North Yorkshire, England. It was popular in the past as a spa town (= one where there are springs of mineral water considered to be healthy to drink) and is now known for its parks, theatres and beaches.

 

The Borough of Scarborough (/ˈskɑːrbərə/)[1][2] is a non-metropolitan district and borough of North Yorkshire, England. In addition to the town of Scarborough, it covers a large stretch of the coast of Yorkshire, including Whitby and Filey.[3] It borders Redcar and Cleveland to the north, the Ryedale and Hambleton districts to the west and the East Riding of Yorkshire to the south.

The lyrics of Scarborough Fair puts forward the concept of unrequited love. The yearning is felt throughout the song, creating a perfect medieval love story in the process. A young man delegates certain impossible tasks to his lover with the condition that she would have to finish those to be able to come back to him.

'스카보로 페어'는 1788년을 끝으로 더 이상 서지 않는 장터로, 다시 돌아갈 수 없는 행복한 시절을 상징한다.

스카보로는 영국의 그리 크지 않은 항구도시로 한 여류작가의 슬픈 일화가 깃들여 있기도 하며, 원래 오래된 스코틀랜드의 민요로, 가사와 관련해 전해오는 이야기가 있기도 하다.

 

 

♧ 스카보로의 추억 : 고향을 그리는 노래

박인희가 부른 <스카보로의 추억>은 본래 Simon & Garfunkel의 명곡 의 번안곡이다.

이 노래는 어릴적 고향에 대한 애잔한 추억과 그리움을 노래하고 있다.

 

스카보로(Scarborough)는 옛날 영국에서 정기적으로 시장이 열리던 지방도시 이름이다.

Fair라는 말도 정기적으로 열리는 시장이란 뜻이다.

톨스토이(Leo Tolstoy)의 명작 단편 <신은 진실을 알지만 기다리신다(God Sees the Truth, But Waits)>에도 'Fair'가 등장한다. 주인공 악시오노프(Ivan Dmitrich Aksionov)가 간밤에 꿈자리가 흉흉하니 가지말라는 아내의 만류를 뿌리치고 멀리 떨어진 '시장(Fair)'으로 장사를 하러 가는 도중에 살인범의 누명을 쓰고 시베리아 감옥으로 끌려가는 대목이 나온다.

Simon & Garfunkel이 1966년 발표한 는 영화 <졸업(The Graduation)>의 O.S.T이자 미국의 베트남전 참전을 비판하는 유명한 반전(反戰) 가요 중 하나다.
1960년대 미국의 남성 듀오인 Simon & Garfunkel은 자타가 공인하는 20세기 최고의 포크 그룹으로 , , 와 같은 불후의 히트곡을 남긴 엘리트 뮤지션들이다.

박인희의 <스카보로의 추억>은 박인희 특유의 감성과 우수(憂愁)가 실린 목소리가 아름답고 잔잔하게 심금을 울린다.
박인희는 1970년대 활동한 가수이자 방송인으로 처음에는 이필원과 <뚜아에무아>라는 혼성 듀오로 활동하기도 했다. 그녀는 숙명여대 불문과를 졸업하였으며 1950년대 한국의 대표적 모더니스트 시인인 댄디보이(dandy boy) 박인환의 <목마와 숙녀>, <세월이 가면> 등을 노래로 불러 유명해졌다.

 

그녀가 부른 노래들의 공통 주제는 애수(哀愁)와 그리움, 내면의 고독이다. 지성과 감성을 겸비하고 <끝이 없는 길>과 같은 히트곡을 작사하여 시인 못지 않은 뛰어난 시작(詩作) 능력도 지녔던 박인희는 노래하는 음유(吟遊)시인으로 손색이 없었다.
시인으로 유명한 이해인 수녀와 여고 동창이기도 한 그녀는 어느덧 칠순을 훌쩍 넘어섰다고 하니 세월의 무상함을 실감한다.
