Among the annals of national anthems as a prelude to sporting events, few have topped the one delivered by Whitney Houston before Super Bowl XXV in 1991 in Tampa, Florida. A woman, her incredible voice, and the bare minimum of extraneous notes. 성조기(星條旗, The Star-Spangled Banner, 별이 박힌 깃발)는 미국의 국가이다. 법률가이자 시인이었던 35세의 프랜시스 스콧 키(Francis Scott Key)가 미·영 전쟁중이던 1814년 영국의 메릴랜드 맥헨리 요새에 대한 공격을 보고 가사를 썼고 , 곡조는 영국의 작곡가 존 스탠퍼드 스미스가 작곡한 (런던)아나크레온 협회의 축배의 노래 〈천상의 아나크레온에게 To Anacreon in Heaven〉에서 선율을 가져왔다. 영국에서 술을 마실 때 부르는 노래 '(To Anacreon in Heaven).

《하느님, 여왕(국왕) 폐하를 지켜 주소서》(God Save the Queen 또는 God Save the King )(1725~1776)

1931년 이전에는 '컬럼비아 만세'( Hail, Columbia) 등이 국가로 쓰이기도 했다(1798~1931) .

 

 

프랜시스 스콧 키의 가사는 1814년 〈맥헨리 요새의 방어 The Defence of Fort McHenry〉라는 제목으로 처음 출판되었고 그해에 이 노래가 낱장 악보로 재출판되면서 제목도 바뀌었다.

 

전체 4연으로 된 이 노래는 1889년에 해군으로부터 인정 받았고, 1916년에 백악관으로부터 인정 받았으며, 1931년 당시 미국의 대통령이었던 후버의 요청으로 의회에서 국가로 공식 제정되었다. 

 

오랫동안 수차례 출판되면서 가사와 음악 모두 조금씩 바뀌었다. 존 필립 수자가 미국 육·해군을 위해 편곡했고 그밖에도 여러 음악교육가들이 공식적인 편곡을 남겼다.

곡의 어려운 음계와 박자로 인해 관중 합창이 여의치 않아 여론의 불만이 많고 국가 교체가 건의되기도 했으나 설문 조사 등에서는 ‘별이 박힌 깃발’을 지지하는 의견이 다수를 차지하는 등 미국을 대표하는 국가로 인정받고 있다.

 

 

영국과의 의전행사에서는 국가간의 예법상 2·3절을 생략하는 것이 보통이다. 가사는 다음과 같다.
