“This album has a theme of journeys,” comments Enya in a statement. “Journeys to the island; through the length of a lifetime; through history, through emotions; and journeys across great oceans. So although it’s not a ‘themed’ album, as such, we nevertheless have an underlying connection between songs.”

1987년부터 지금까지의 앨범 커버 속에서 그녀는 늘 나부끼는 흰 드레스를 입은 채 백마와 혹은 물가에서, 왕이 앉는 성좌에 앉아 있었다.

 

50대 중반 엔야(Enya)의 8번째 스튜디오 앨범 은 불빛 하나 없는 오지 섬의 밤하늘을 노래한다. 8000만 장 넘게 팔아 치운 그래미 4관왕, 30년간 최고의 여성 솔로 아티스트의 자리를 지켜온 그녀는 아일랜드 고유의 켈틱(Celtic) 사운드를 바탕으로 음악을 만들어내는 ‘뉴에이지의 여왕’이다. 엔야의 새 앨범에 대한 이야기다.

 

영국-프랑스 사이 영국 해협(English Channel)에는 프랑스 노르망디 해안 가까이에

프랑스령도 아니고 영국령도 아닌 섬, 채널아일랜드(Channel Islands)가 있다.

‘사크(Sark)섬’ :

The Channel Islands(영국 왕실 속령)의 Bailiwick of Guernsey(건지 행정 관할구)에 속함

 

엔야가 이 앨범의 영감을 받은 것으로 알려진 이곳은 인구가 500명으로, 섬으로서는 최초로 ‘국제밤하늘보호섬(Dark Sky Island)’ 으로 지정된 곳이다.

 

따라서 자동차 운행이 금지된 이 섬에서는 마차, 자전거, 트랙터가 교통수단이기에 어두운 밤에는 인공불빛이 없고 오로지 유난히 반짝이는 별빛만이 밤하늘을 아름답게 수놓는 것이다.

 

*한편 국제밤하늘협회(IDA)는 강원도 양양과 경북 영양군 수비면 일대 밤하늘을 국제 밤하늘 보호공원으로 지정했다.

Sark is a small island within the Bailiwick of Guernsey in southwestern English Channel, 25 miles off the French coast of Normandy.

The isle was under Europe's feudal system for the last 440 year.

Sark (French: Sercq; Sercquiais: Sèr or Cerq) is a part of the Channel Islands in the southwestern English Channel, off the coast of Normandy, France fief, which forms part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, with its own set of laws based on Norman law and its own parliament. It has a population of about 500. Sark (including the nearby island of Brecqhou ).

Sark is one of the few remaining places in the world where cars are banned from roads and only tractors and horse-drawn vehicles are allowed. In 2011, Sark was designated as a Dark Sky Community and the first Dark Sky Island in the world.

La Coupée

is an isthmus joining Great Sark and Little Sark in the Channel Islands at 49°25.25′N 2°21.97′W. The land on both sides of this causeway has been eroded away by the sea, and all that now connects Little Sark to the rest of the island is a narrow ridge a mere three metres (nine feet) wide and 90 metres (300 ft) in length, with a drop of close to 80 metres (260 ft) on either side.

 

Protective railings were added to La Coupée in 1900. There is currently a narrow concrete road covering the entirety of the isthmus, built in 1945 by German prisoners of war under the direction of the Royal Engineers.

 

Because they were partially isolated from Great Sark, the inhabitants of Little Sark had their own distinct form of Sercquiais, the native Norman dialect of the island.

 

Eithne Pádraigín Ní Bhraonáin (anglicised as Enya Patricia Brennan, /ˈɛnjə/; born 17 May 1961), known professionally as Enya, is an Irish singer, songwriter, record producer and musician. Born into a musical family and raised in the Irish-speaking area of Gweedore in County Donegal, Enya began her music career when she joined her family's Celtic folk band Clannad in 1980 on keyboards and backing vocals. She left in 1982 with their manager and producer Nicky Ryan to pursue a solo career, with Ryan's wife Roma Ryan as her lyricist. Enya developed her sound over the following four years with multitracked vocals and keyboards with elements of new age, Celtic, classical, church, and folk music. She has sung in ten languages.

 

엔야(Enya:Eithne Ni Bhraonain) 는 아일랜드 북서쪽 끝에 있는 귀도 (Gweedore)에서 자랐다.

귀도는 매우 아름답고 조용한 해변도시이며 아일랜드의 전통이 짙게 남아있는 지역으로 이러한 환경은 그녀의 단단한 음악적 뿌리가 되고 있다.

즉 아일랜드의 전통음악에 그녀가 대학에서 공부한 클래식이 합하여진 것이 엔야의 음악이다.

 

그러나 그녀의 음악적 재능은 다분히 선천적인 것이다.

그녀의 아버지는 그 지방에서 유명한 가수이자 색소폰 연주자였고 어머니는 독학으로 클래식 피아노를 연주할 정도의 음악광이었다.

 

따라서 엔야는 다방면의 음악적 환경에서 감수성을 키워나갈 수 있었으며 이미 10대에 그녀의 언니 한명과 오빠 2명 그리고 쌍둥이 숙부로 결성된 패밀리 그룹 "클리나드"의 일원으로 키보드를 연주할 만큼 성숙했다.

대학에서 고전음악과 지휘, 작곡, 피아노를 학습한 엔야는 82년부터 본격적으로 작곡을 시작했다.

 

아일랜드의 전통음악에 그녀가 대학에서 공부한 클래식이 합하여진 것이 엔야의 음악이다.

아일랜드 토박인이지만 서양과 동양의 이미지를 함께 지니고 있는 Enya는 어린 시절부터 교회성가대 일원으로 활동하면서 자신의 음악적 재능을 키울 수 있었다.

 

바로 이런 점을 두고 평론가들은 종교적 성향이 짙은 여성가수로 지목하는지도 모른다.

Enya의 음악은 아일랜드의 정서와 성가적인 접근방식, 자신의 목소리를 하나의 악기처럼 자유롭고 신비롭게 구사하는 스캣 등으로 이루어져있다.

그녀의 대표곡 Orinoco Flow 가 이러한 내용을 대변해 주는 곡이다.

 

근래 세계인들의 사랑을 조용히 끌어모으고 있는 엔야의 음악은 "가사가 있는 뉴 에이지 음악" 이라 할 수 있다.

차분하고 신선하며 때로는 그레고리오 성가처럼 엄숙한 느낌마저도 지니고 있는 엔야의 음악들은 우리에게 편안한 안식과 명상의 공감을 제공, 색다른 음악의 즐거움을 갖게 한다.
