This song is written by a swedish pastor in a little village in Småland.

Carl Gustav Boberg wrote the poem "O Store Gud" (O Great God) in 1885 with nine verses.

 

"How Great Thou Art" is a Christian hymn based on a Swedish traditional melody and a poem written by Carl Boberg (1859–1940) in Mönsterås, Sweden, in 1885. It was translated into German and then into Russian.

It was translated into English from the Russian by English missionary Stuart K. Hine, who also added two original verses of his own. It was popularised by George Beverly Shea and Cliff Barrows during the Billy Graham crusades. 
 It was voted the United Kingdom's favourite hymn by BBC's Songs of Praise.  "How Great Thou Art" was ranked second (after "Amazing Grace") on a list of the favourite hymns of all time in a survey by Christianity Today magazine in 2001.

Carl Gustav Boberg (16 August 1859 – 7 January 1940) was a Swedish poet and elected official, best known for writing the Swedish language poem of "O Store Gud" (O great God) from which the English language hymn

"How Great Thou Art" is derived.

1885년 칼 보버그(C.G, Boberg, 1859~1940)가 스웨덴의 서남해안을 여행하던 중  종교적인 영감을 받아 지은 시를 가사로 했다.

 

그는 여행 중에 대낮에 갑자기 천둥번개와 비바람을 만나서 잠시 심한 공포에 사로잡히는데, 잠시후 맑아져서 다시 눈부신 햇빛이 나오고 숲에서는 새들의 노래 소리가 들려온다.

그는 즉시 그 자리에 무릎 꿇어 전능하신 하나님께 겸허한 기도를 드렸고, 나중에 그 기억을 되살려 9편의 시를 쓴다.

 

몇 년 후 그는 어느 교회 집회에서  그의 시가  스웨덴의 민요 선율을 붙여  불리는  노래를  듣는다.
