Top Belarusian general quits over ally Russia's invasion of Ukraine: Report

| March 06, 2022 09:49 AM

A top Belarusian military leader has quit over Russia's invasion of Ukraine, according to a Ukrainian official who posted the decorated general's purported resignation letter online.

Maj. Gen. Viktor Gulevich, the deputy defense minister for the Moscow-aligned nation on Ukraine's northern border, said his soldiers want no part of Russian President Vladimir Putin's war and he is unable to mobilize them for the effort. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is close with Putin, but his country has hosted peace talks, which so far have proven fruitless. Ukraine claimed last week that Belarusian forces had crossed its borders to support Russia, but Belarus denied it.

"Conducting explanatory work with the commanders of military units did not yield results," Gulevich allegedly wrote in a letter posted online by former Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Nosov. "I have the courage to assume that the replacement of the commanders of these military units, who could not organize the formation of groups on the ground, will not give us the result we need."

"In view of the above, I ask for your decision regarding the acceptance of my resignation," he allegedly wrote to his boss, Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin.

Gulevich, who was personally targeted for sanctions by the West in connection with Russia's invasion, helped lead joint military exercises with Russia and allowed Moscow to position troops along Belarus's border with Ukraine.

Belarus questioned whether the letter was real and said the Belarusian military is "100 percent" ready to be deployed wherever it is ordered to go. Oleksiy Arestovych, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said on Rada TV Sunday he was trying to confirm Gulevich's resignation.

The United Kingdom's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, in sanctioning Gulevich and three other Belarusian military officials on March 1, described Gulevich as responsible for directing the Belarusian military to support the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“He has directed joint military exercises with Russia, and consented to the deployment of Russian troops along the border of Belarus with Ukraine, which has directly contributed to Russia’s ability to attack Ukraine, including from positions in Belarus,” the office said in a statement.
