격언(格言  maxim), 금언(金言), 잠언(箴言)

Maxim은 인생을 올바로 살아가는 데 도움을 주는 경구. "하늘은 스스로 돕는 자를 돕는다"와 같이 인간 도덕과 행동 규범에 대해 만인이 공감하는 내용으로 되어 있다.

속담과 달리 화자(話者)가 명확한 경우도 많다. "상대를 알고 나를 알면 백전백승이다"(손자), "칼로 일어서는 자, 칼로 망한다"(예수), "시련은 있어도 좌절은 없다"(정주영) 등이다.

격언이 광고 카피로 등장하는 경우도 있는데 증권 광고에서 "계란을 한 바구니에 담지 말라"는 구절이 한 예다. 반대로 광고 카피가 널리 알려져 일종의 격언처럼 쓰이기도 한다. 가령 한 이동통신회사의 "차이는 인정한다, 차별엔 도전한다"란 카피가 한 예다.

거리에서 집없이 살던 철학자 디오게네스에게 알레산더 대왕이 찾아와 “선생님, 제가 도와드릴 일이 없습니까?”하고 물었더니, 디오게네스는 “아무 것도 바라는 것 없소. 대왕께서 내 앞에 서 있어서 햇볕을 쬘 수 없으니, 좀 비켜 주시오.” 했다는 것이다.

거지이면서도 당당한 디오게네스를 만난 알렉산더 대왕은, “내가 알렉산더 왕이 아니라면, 디오게네스가 되고 싶었을 것이다.”고 했다고 한다. 대왕도 부러워한 디오게네스의 행복의 비결은, “행복은 자기가 처한 환경에 만족하는데 있다(Happiness lies in contentment)”는 것일 터...

International editions

Maxim has launched international editions of its magazines since 1995. Most recently it has launched its 26th and 27th international  editions in Serbia and Greece where it is published by Attica Media.
